Overview

Query Translations allow you to modify the search terms entered by a user. The modified search term is then passed to the search engine. This can be useful when users often incorrectly spell a brand or product name, or when a term might have another meaning.

For example, users may often enter "blue tack" when your product descriptions contain the correct product name of "blu-tack". You can use query translations to provide the correct results.

Query translations can either apply automatically, or can be used to make a "Did you mean?" suggestion to the user conducting the search:

  • If the translation is flagged to auto correct, the system will automatically display search results for "blu-tack" without prompting the user for confirmation.
  • If the translation is not flagged to auto correct, the system will display search results for "blue tack" as entered by the user, and will additionally prompt "Did you mean 'blu-tack'?"

Query Translations are maintained through the 'Query Translation' tab in the Lucene Settings maintenance page.

You do NOT need to reindex after maintaining Query Translations, as they modify the search query, not the indexed data.
