It is now increasingly popular to be able to search for content such as SEO metadata and articles on a selling site. For example, you can make searchable how products are used, through articles, blogs, videos and pictures. A customer could search for firmware upgrades for the smart device they purchased from you. We have widened the search functionality to include such static content.

How does Static Content Search work?

When 'Static Content Search' is set to be included, the search engine will index publicly accessible page content for the Search facility.

Step-by-step guide

Follow these steps to configure the Content Search functionality for your site:

1. Turn on Content Search

  1. To turn on this feature, go to Settings → Feature Management → Content

  2. Locate Content Search and click Configure.

  3. Toggle on Enable Content Search Feature.

  4. Set the schedule to a few minutes in the future, and click Save and Exit.

  5. In CMS, navigate to Advanced Settings →Lucene Search Settings.

  6. Select the Index Settings tab.

  7. To enable indexing, tick the Enabled checkbox.

  8. Tick Perform Partial Word Searches.

  9. Select the Search Type: 'Matching Terms'.

  10. To save the settings, click Update.

  11. Click the Indexing tab.

  12. To initiate re-indexing of the content of all pages, click the Reindex Page Content button.

2. Reconfigure Product Search widget to include content pages

The Product Search widget, which provides the search facility on on your site, needs to be reconfigured to include static content.

  1. Navigate to Content → Page & Templates → Theme Layout.

  2. Click the Theme Layout option.

  3. Locate the Product Search widget and click Edit. In our example, the Product Search widget is under Zone:HeaderColumn2.

  4. Locate Static Content Search and select 'Include Static Content Search'. (Note - if you are creating a search for content pages only, then select 'Static Content Search Only'.)

  5. If you want to limit the number of results returned for content pages, scroll down to 'Limit the Product and Static Content Result Returned?' and ensure it is toggled on. In 'Static Content Search Result to Display', enter the maximum number of results to appear. If there are more results than the maximum number, the customer can click on 'View More Pages'.

  6. Click on the Titles tab and change the search results headings as required.
  7. Click Save and if your site is in Page Preview mode, click Publish to effect the changes on your site.

3. Customise the Page Content Search Result template (optional)

Customise the zero results returned message in the Page Content Search Result Template.

  1. Navigate to Content → Page & Templates → Other Page & Templates.

  2. Click Edit for the Page Content Search Result widget.

  3. Click the Notification tab and type in your new message.

  4. Click Save, and if you have your site set to Page Preview, then click Publish to effect the changes.

4. Configure the Product List Title widget

  1. Navigate to Content → Page & Templates → Products → Product List.

  2. The Product List Title widget should be at the top of the Product List page. Click Edit.

  3. The Static Web Pages Found Message displays text relating to search results for content pages. In the default message '{0} web page(s) found with contents related to your search', '{0}' is the number of pages found.
Change the message to suit the tone of your business if required.

  4. Click Save at the bottom of the page. If your site is set to 'Page Preview', click Publish to effect the changes on your site.

5. Test the reconfigured search for content

  1. Perform a search to see what results are returned. You should be able to see the message from the Product List Title widget in the results display.

If you search returns no results, ensure your "no results" message from the Product Search widget's notification tab is displayed.
  2. If we click on the Search Suggestions message highlighted in red in the image from Step 1, the system will bring up a list of pages in our site that contain the keyword.

  3. If we search for a partial word that is not in a title, the system will also return results.
  4. If you hit return on the Search Suggestions instead of clicking the "n web pages found" message, then the system will return a list of web pages that contain the keyword and a list of products that match it. In this example, 1 web page and no products match the keyword.
  5. You can click on the web page results to display the static content.

  6. If your keyword matches products and static content, then searching and pressing return will give the following results. In our example, we have Product Suggestions turned on in the Product Search widget, so the product search returned product names that are spelled similarly to our keyword.

Additional Information

Make sure you enable Partial Word Search in your Lucene Search Indexing so your customers don't have to know the exact name of your static content to find it.
